WHAT IS THE AI50 ANNIVERSARY WEBSITE?

May 2011 marked the 50th anniversary of Amnesty International. The AI50 campaign will run from May 2011 – May 2012, and will focus on SIX ANNIVERSARY CAMPAIGNS. AI50.ca is an innovative website that harnesses the power of social media and digital activism to take action against human rights abuse. Check out the two ways you can participate:

CREATE AN ACCOUNT (IF YOU HAVEN'T ALREADY):

To participate in this Virtual Event, and others, you will need to create a myAmnesty account. It's easy to sign up and once you do, you can take action in all Virtual Events with just a few clicks! Your personal myAmnesty profile allows you to customize how you participate in events, and it also keeps track of all the events you have participated in.

Already have too many passwords? No problem! You can log in or sign up to myAmnesty, using any of your social media accounts. So you can still take action, with one less password to remember!

CUSTOMIZE YOUR EVENT SETTINGS:

For each Virtual Event, you CHOOSE the actions you want to participate in. Click the NEXT STEP button to see all the action options for this event. You can simply click on the action check boxes and save your choices (just a few clicks and you're done). You can also personalize the pre-filled messages if you want. After all, you know your family and friends best. You know how to reach out and inspire them to take action too!

You can return to EDIT your actions, as much as you like, up until the Virtual Event releases. Remember, always SAVE your action settings after you have edited them!

EMAILING YOUR FRIENDS:

• When you choose to participate in an email action, your emails will be saved and held until the Virtual Event release date (above), when they will be automatically sent along with everyone else's email messages.
• If the Virtual Event has already been released, you can still email this action. Please note that in this case your email will send immediately.
• Your email(s) will be sent using the email address we have on file in your myAmnesty account.
• We will not email anything on your behalf, unless YOU explicitly select to participate in this specific email action.
• You can personalize the pre-filled message or send it as is.

LEAVE A COMMENT:

• When you choose to leave a comment, your message will be saved and then used by Amnesty at a rally, protest, or for another purpose as described beside the checkbox.
• If the Virtual Event has already been released, you can still leave a comment.
• You must provide personalized message to leave a comment, and your message must be less than 150 characters long.

TAKE ACTION BY EMAILING A PERSON:

• When you choose to participate in an email action, your email will be saved and held until the Virtual Event release date (above), when it will be automatically sent along with everyone else's email messages.
• If the Virtual Event has already been released, you can still email this action. Please note that in this case your email will send immediately.
• Your email will be sent using the email address we have on file in your myAmnesty account.
• We will not send an email on your behalf, unless YOU explicitly select to participate in this specific email action.

TAKE ACTION WITH YOUR FACEBOOK ACCOUNT:

• When you choose to participate in a Facebook action, your post will be saved and held until the Virtual Event release date (above), when it will be automatically released along with everyone else's Facebook messages.
• If the Virtual Event has already been released, you can still post this action. Please note that in this case your message will post immediately.
• When you select a Facebook action for the first time, you will be asked to connect your Facebook account to your myAmnesty account. Facebook will then prompt you to AUTHORIZE myAmnesty – this is completely safe. You only need to connect your Facebook account once, and you can disconnect it at any time.
• We will NEVER have access to your Facebook password. You are simply linking your account, so we can automatically post your message on the release day. We will not post anything on your behalf, unless YOU explicitly select to participate in this specific action.
• You can personalize the pre-filled message or release it as is.

TAKE ACTION WITH YOUR FOURSQUARE ACCOUNT:

• When you choose to participate in a Foursquare check-in action, your "check-in" and message will be saved and held until the Virtual Event release date (above). On the release date, you will automatically be "checked in" to the location along with everyone else. Your Foursquare account will also be used to leave a "tip" at the location. Your "tip" and check-in message will be the same, but unlike check-in messages that can only be viewed by your friends, tips can be seen by the public.
• If the Virtual Event has already been released, you can still post this action. Please note that in this case your "check-in" and "tip" for the location will post immediately.
• When you select a Foursquare check-in action for the first time, you will be asked to connect your Foursquare account to your myAmnesty account. Foursquare will then prompt you to AUTHORIZE myAmnesty – this is completely safe. You only need to connect your Foursquare account once, and you can disconnect it at any time.
• We will NEVER have access to your Foursquare password. You are simply linking your account, so we can automatically check you in and post your tip on the release day. We will not post anything on your behalf, unless YOU explicitly select to participate in this specific action.
• You can personalize the pre-filled message or release it as is.

TAKE ACTION BY SIGNING AN OPEN LETTER:

• When you sign an open letter, you are adding your name to a document that will be displayed publicly.
• The open letter will be saved and held until the Virtual Event release date (above), at which time it will be printed out and mailed to the designated recipient.
• We will NOT add your name to this open letter, unless YOU explicitly choose to do so.

• When you sign a digital petition, you are publicly adding your name to a document that will be sent to the designated recipient.
• The petition will be saved and held until the Virtual Event release date (above), at which time it will be sent to the designated recipient.
• We will NOT add your name to this petition, unless YOU explicitly choose to do so.
