After Devastating Oil Spills,
Shell Must Do More Than Talk
THIS EVENT RELEASED ON Feb–22–2012 AND IS NOW CLOSED.
In a town that has traditionally relied on agriculture and fishing, people are afraid to eat locally-caught fish and crops are disappearing. Poverty is endemic with few jobs and no industry remaining; people who once helped others now rely on aid themselves.
This is the story of Bodo, Ogoniland, a town on the Niger Delta in Western Africa; the community suffered two significant oil spills in 2008 that poisoned their water, air and soil. Three years ago, Royal Dutch Shell accepted liability — and still, they have done nothing to adequately clean up their mess. As long as the land and water remains contaminated, the community cannot recover and their rights continue to be violated.
It’s time for Shell to OWN UP, PAY UP and CLEAN UP. The story of Bodo is just one disaster among many in an area that has suffered more than 6,800 oil spills since 1976 — often because oil companies in the region have failed to properly take care of their infrastructure or respond to spills.
As detailed in Amnesty’s report The True 'Tragedy', the residents of this whole region have been robbed of many basic human rights — and it must be stopped.
In May 2012, Shell will host their Annual General Meeting in The Hague with an audio-visual link to a satellite meeting place in London. Amnesty International supporters will be at both locations in person, and we ask you to join us.
Hold Shell accountable for the devastation their failures have wreaked on this community and tell shareholders why Shell must act now. Your message will be shared with investors at the company AGM. SIGN AN OPEN LETTER TO MR. PETER VOSER, CEO, ROYAL DUTCH SHELL
Dear Mr. Voser,
We are sure you share our concern for the people of the Niger Delta whose lives and livelihoods have been severely impacted by the oil spills in the region. We realize that Royal Dutch Shell issued a statement in 2011 acknowledging liability and reiterating your commitment to cleaning up the affected area. However, we understand that the clean-up has not happened yet. These delays are contributing to further human rights violations.
In line with the report of the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), we strongly support the recommendations that:
- Shell accept responsibility and take pro-active action to conduct a wider scientific assessment of all the oil producing areas of the Niger Delta.
- Shell immediately contribute an initial $1 billion to an independent fund dedicated to the clean-up of the region.
- Shell ensure that there is a comprehensive clean up operation of the Niger Delta, overseen by a credible independent actor, such as UNEP.
Many people in the Niger Delta region continue to struggle on a daily basis, just to satisfy their most basic needs for clean water and food. Shell Oil has an opportunity to be an important part of the solution to improve the lives of so many people.
We urge you to commit to the recommendations above by the time of your Annual General Meeting in May 2012.
Sincerely,
Amnesty Supporter

SUBJECT: Virtual Protest: After devastating oil spills, this community deserves better
Clean water, food that’s safe to eat, fresh air - things we just expect to have. But what if that was taken away from us?
There's a place in Western Africa called Bodo, and that's exactly what happened to them: Two oil spills in 2008 poisoned their water, soil and air. People in this fishing community are now afraid to eat the fish, and their crops are disappearing. These oil spills have been devestating.
Royal Dutch Shell accepted responsibility for both spills, but three years later, the area around Bodo is still a mess. Why?
To me, this is unacceptable, and I've joined Amnesty International to call on Shell to finally take action. Shell's Annual General Meeting is coming up in May, and Amnesty supporters will be there; I've submitted a message that will be shared with Shell's stakeholders as part of their protest.
Adding your message takes just a few minutes - it's a short message! But your voice could help the people of Bodo get their lives back.
Please join me! Go to http://ai50.ca/s/igwm6
Sincerely,
Amnesty Supporter
