Video: An Introduction to the Social Media Action Centre and Digital Activism.

HOW THE SOCIAL MEDIA ACTION CENTRE WORKS

The Social Media Action Centre gives you the opportunity to take a simple action for justice every two weeks from May 2011 to May 2012. These actions link with Amnesty supporters from across the globe, focusing on six campaign areas where we believe we can make progress in Amnesty’s 50th anniversary year. The Events harness the power of social media so that people can speak out together against human rights abuses. FIND OUT HOW IT WORKS BELOW!

01

DECIDE TO PARTICIPATE IN VIRTUAL EVENTS

What is a Virtual Event? It's an online protest! We've taken the idea of a traditional protest and brought it to the digital world. Virtual Events bring people together at the same time to speak out about the same issue.

Each event is made up of digital actions, like signing a petition or posting a Facebook message. The best part about Virtual Events is that they release automatically. You SAVE your actions in the Social Media Action Centre, where they will be HELD until the “release date”. On that day, everyone's posts, tweets and emails are sent out at the EXACT same time. The result? Networks and inboxes are flooded with the same message at the same time. Pretty powerful!

02

CREATE AN ACCOUNT (IF YOU HAVEN'T ALREADY)

To participate in Virtual Events, you will need to create a myAmnesty account. It's easy to sign up and once you do, you can take action in all Virtual Events with just a few clicks – simple! Your personal myAmnesty profile allows you to customize how you participate in events, and it also keeps track of all the events you have participated in. Click here to create your myAmnesty account now. If you already have an account, login.

03

CONNECT YOUR SOCIAL MEDIA ACCOUNTS

To participate in social media actions, you will be asked to LINK your relevant social media accounts (eg. Facebook) to your myAmnesty account. You will only need to connect an account once, and can disconnect it anytime. Once your accounts are connected, you can easily take action in any Virtual Event.

When you choose to participate in an action that uses a social media account, you will be prompted to AUTHORIZE myAmnesty to connect to your social media acount. This is very easy and completely safe!

We will NEVER see or have access to your account passwords. You are simply linking your account(s) so that we can automatically release your social media messages, at the same time as everyone else's. We will never post anything on your behalf, unless YOU have explicitly selected to participate in a specific action for a specific Virtual Event.

NOTE: If you don't wish to participate using social media, no problem! You can still send emails, sign petitions, and sign open letters.

04

CUSTOMIZE AND SAVE YOUR EVENT ACTIONS

For each Virtual Event, you CHOOSE the actions you want to participate in. You simply click on the action check boxes and save your choices (just a few clicks and you're done). If you want, you can also personalize the pre-filled messages. After all, you know your friends and family best. You know how to reach out and inspire them to take action too!

You can return to EDIT your actions, as much as you like, up until the Virtual Event releases. Remember, always SAVE your action settings after you have edited them!

05

RELEASE DAY

Each Virtual Event has a “release date”, that is publicized when the event is announced. On that release date, at 12 noon EST, all of the actions you have saved will be released. This means that, depending on which actions you have chosen, your messages will post, tweet or send automatically. You don't have to worry about remembering to take action at a specific time – we do it for you. So easy, so effective!
